Josiah Gibbs, publisher of the Free Lance, wrote in the first issue, "This issue of the Free Lance will find its way if possible, into the home of every family in Piute County, and a large number in Wayne County. It will be sent to you for a month, and if in the meantime, you don't want it, just send a post card, and that one cent will be all this paper will cost you to October 1."
