The Kane County Independent began publishing in Kanab, Utah, the spring of 1912. Despite publisher C. H. Townsend's claim that the Independent "will be placed on a par with the best newspapers in southern Utah," he printed mainly "canned," non-Utah-specific content except for some community news on page 1 and a column called Local Briefs on page 8.
