Garland City Globe

1917 - 1919

The scenic Bear River Valley in northern Utah has long attracted settlement, from Fremont Indians to fur trappers. In 1889, Mormon homesteaders began to arrive, establishing settlements including Bear River City, Fielding, and on the east bank of the Malad River, Garland. The town's population was almost 1,000 in 1906, when the Garland Globe debuted, and it was home to more than two dozen businesses. The six page introductory edition lauded the town of Garland and its "brilliant possibilities of tomorrow." For more than two decades the newspaper appeared every Saturday and thrived along with the town it served. Manager and editor J.A. Wixom promised to remain politically independent, and "devoted to the interests of Garland and the Bear River Valley." Read more.
