The Salt Lake Herald gave praise to the first issue of the County Register, the new paper in Ephraim, Sanpete County. The publishers of the older and more established Manti Home Sentinel had different feelings and were offended by the use of "County" in the title. The Sentinel, located in Manti (the county seat) considered itself to be the county's newspaper of record. Nearly a year later, the Provo Enquirer lamented the demise of the Register, stating "The Register may have bloomed...[but] it passed to its reward sometime that summer."
We extend our thanks to the Utah Department of Heritage and Arts for their generous funding and the loan of the original newspapers for scanning.
